Matthew 25:1-3  (8-9-20)

(Lesson adapted from Concordia Publishing House)

From the temple, Jesus and His disciples went to the Mount of Olives, where He taught them about the end times. Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom, He said. Five were wise, and five were foolish. Those who were foolish took their lamps, but no extra oil, with them. The wise took jars of oil along with their lamps. When the bridegroom was late, they all got tired and fell asleep. At midnight someone shouted, Look! The bridegroom is coming! Go and meet him! Then all of the virgins got up and started lighting their lamps. The foolish said to the wise, Let us have some of your oil; our lamps are going out. No, the wise answered, otherwise there will not be enough for all of us. Go to the dealers and buy some for yourselves. While they were gone to buy some oil, the bridegroom arrived. Those who were ready went into the marriage feast with him. After the doors were closed, the other virgins returned and called out, Lord! Lord, open the door for us! Really, I don’t know you, he answered. Watch out, Jesus said, “because you don’t know the day or the hour when the Son of Man is returning.
