Matthew 27:27-54; 28:5-6

(Lesson adapted from Concordia Publishing House)

The soldiers of the governor took Jesus, stripped Him, and put a scarlet robe on Him. They twisted a crown of thorns, put it on His head, and put a reed in His right hand. Kneeling before Him, they mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” They spit on Him and struck Him on the head. Pilate took water and washed His hands before the crowd. He said, “I am innocent of this man’s blood. See to it yourselves.” And all the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!” The soldiers led Jesus away. They seized Simon of Cyrene and laid on him the cross. He carried it behind Jesus. They came to the place that is called The Skull. There they crucified Him and the criminals. One was on His right and one was on His left. And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” The people stood by, watching. But the rulers and the soldiers mocked Jesus. There was darkness over the whole land. Then Jesus called out with a loud voice. He said, “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit!” And He breathed His last. Now there was a man named Joseph. He took down Jesus’ body. He wrapped it and laid Jesus in a tomb cut in stone. The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed. They saw the tomb. On the first day of the week, the women went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb. But when they went in, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. Then, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. The men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? Jesus is not here. “He has risen!”
