(Lesson adapted from Concordia Publishing House)
Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Rise and go toward the south. Take the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. This is a desert place.” And Philip rose and went. And there was an Ethiopian, a court official of Candace, the queen. He was in charge of all her treasure. He had come to Jerusalem to worship. Now he was returning, seated in his chariot. He was reading the prophet Isaiah. And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot. So Philip ran to him. He heard him reading Isaiah the prophet. He asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. Now the passage of the Scripture that he was reading was this: “Like a sheep He was led to death and like a lamb before its shearer is silent, so He opens not His mouth.” And the Ethiopian said to Philip, “About whom, I ask you, does the prophet say this? About himself? About someone else?” Then Philip opened his mouth. Beginning with this Scripture, he told him the Good News about Jesus. And as they were going along the road, they came to some water. The Ethiopian said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?” And he commanded the chariot to stop. They both went down into the water, Philip and the Ethiopian. Philip baptized him. And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away. The Ethiopian saw him no more and went on his way rejoicing. But Philip found himself at Azotus. He preached the Gospel to all the towns by the sea.
Bible Memory Verse
As the Father has sent Me, even so I am sending you. John 20:21
What did Philip do when the Ethiopian had questions about the Scriptures? How is this an example to us?
Give an example of when you have shared God’s Word with someone.
Do you know someone who doesn’t believe in Jesus? How could you share God’s Word with this person?
O Holy Spirit, You give us faith in the triune God, and You help that faith to grow in us. Give us the desire and the power to tell others the Good News of salvation, found only through faith in Jesus. We pray this in the name of Jesus, our risen Lord and Savior. Amen.
