(Lesson adapted from Concordia Publishing House)

There was a man named Nicodemus. He was a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night. He said to Jesus, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God. No one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.” Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said, “How can a man be born when he is old?” Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ Nicodemus said, “How can these things be?” Jesus said, “Are you the teacher of Israel? You do not know these things? Truly, truly, I say to you, I have told you about things on earth. But you do not believe. How can you believe if I tell you about things from heaven? Remember how Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness? So must the Son of Man be lifted up. Whoever believes in Him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.

Discussion Questions

How does the Holy Spirit create and strengthen our faith?

Why is it so important to go to Church then?

Do you read the Bible/have devotions together as a family?  If not, plan to start doing this.

When can you make time in your day to read or listen to God’s Word?

Holy Spirit, thank You for giving us a new birth of faith through Baptism. We are so grateful You help us to see Jesus as our Savior and to understand God’s ways. Fan the flame of faith in our hearts! In Jesus’ powerful name we pray. Amen.

Dove or Baptismal Shell Picture.  A dove is sometimes used as a symbol of the Holy Spirit.  (Why is this?)  Draw a picture of a dove that you can post somewhere to remind you of the work of the Holy Spirit.  Or draw and color a Baptismal shell and post somewhere so that you can be reminded of God’s important work in Baptism.

Remembering Your Baptism.  As a family talk about when each person was baptized.  Look at photos of the Baptisms in your family and look at any special items you have from that day and talk about their significance (eg. A banner, candle, cloth).
